The Fall Harvest, What To Do With It?

Our spring garden didn't not survive at all.  We planted 11 different crops, and 9 of them didn't even survive the ground transplant.  The two that did make it, the zucchini and eggplant, don't look so good today.  So today, we decided to look at The Barefoot Gardener to see what we should plant next.

This is the list of what we can grow.

Beets
Broccoli

Cabbage

Carrots

Cauliflower

Celery

Chinese Cabbage
Collards
Endive
Escarole
Kale
Kohlrabi
Lettuce

Mustard
Onions

Parsley
Peas, English

Potatoes

Radishes
Spinach

Strawberries

Turnips

Mom says we will plant broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, lettuce, onions, peas, potatoes, spinach and strawberries. That's 10 new crops.

It looks like our next planting season will be October, so that gives us plenty of time to plan.  Mom wants to do as much in containers, vertical gardens and a greenhouse, as she can to try and control the conditions and not subject our crops to whatever might be in our soil that's killing everything we plant.

You can grow just about anything when you can control the climate.  A greenhouse allows you to control things like temperature, while protecting your plants from the elements too.

A greenhouse also makes it easier to control any pests that might be harming your garden too.  We lost our only hen a few weeks ago, but we're planning to get more, and to get rabbits too, so a greenhouse should also help to keep them out.

We found some great ideas on Pinterest for using old pallets to make vertical gardens.  You can grow a lot of plants in vertical gardens, and you can use a vertical set up to trellis vining plants, which will really increase production because it saves so much of the huge amount of ground space that vining plants need to spread out.  If the plants bear heavy fruit like pumpkins, you can use old pantyhose to make a 'sling' for them

  1. Hi Daniel,

Looks like you have some big plans for your garden. I hope your harvest garden will do much better then this one did.

  2. Thank you Leslie. We're planning a post about bucket, raised bed, and vertical gardens because we're going to try to contain as much of our garden as possible to keep our plants out of the ground.
